# Sheet detents

> Sheet detents are the heights at which a sheet comes to rest. iOS sheets have a large detent and an optional medium detent, and Material 3 bottom sheets are standard or modal.

## Why it matters

A sheet that opens at the right height keeps people in context. Apple’s guidance is a default size that does not cover most of the window, with a medium detent for progressive disclosure.

The detents belong to the platform, so a design only chooses which ones.

## iOS and Android

| | iOS | Android (Material 3) | Appetite UI |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Name | Sheet with medium and large detents | Bottom sheet, standard and modal | Modal Sheet |
| Sheet in the file | Medium, Large and Large (Stacked) detents | Bottom sheet, 412 wide, modal or not | See below |
| Sheet corner | 12 pt | 28 dp | `platform/sheet/corner` |

## In Appetite UI

Modal Sheet is one 393 wide sheet with a stack peek. The docs say detents and drag behavior belong to the platform: build the sheet with the native control and draw the content.

## Example

A share sheet opens at the medium detent with the likeliest targets visible; scrolling or dragging the grabber takes it to large for the full list.

## Common mistakes

- A sheet that covers the window on open.
- No grabber on a resizable sheet.
- Building detents by hand instead of using the platform control.
- Three detents where two will do.

## Questions

### What are the sheet detents on iOS?

Large, which every sheet supports, and medium, which you add. With both, the sheet can rest at either height; with only medium it cannot expand to full height.

### What is the Android equivalent?

The Material 3 bottom sheet, standard or modal. In Compose it is ModalBottomSheet.
