Chip
A chip is a compact capsule that filters a list, picks from a set or shows an entry someone added. It is a Material 3 component with no counterpart on the kit’s Apple pages.
Why it matters
A chip lets people filter or choose without leaving the content, so the result changes right under their finger.
It is a Material 3 component with no counterpart on iOS, so a shared design has to say what iOS shows.
Chip on iOS and Android
Also called Filter chip, Tag. The same idea in each system, with the values Appetite UI gives it.
| Value | iOS | Android | Appetite UI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Name | No chip on the kit’s Apple pages | Chip, 32 high at radius 8 | Chip |
| Component | iOS | Material 3 | What differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chip | No counterpart | M3 / Chip, 32 high at radius 8 | The Apple pages have no chip |

In practice
Chips work when the options fit on one line and change the content right under them. Behind more than a line of them, a filter sheet is clearer.
Appetite UI uses chips across its screens: the categories over the finance history, the price pins and filters over the booking map, the sort and filter chips of a food delivery category and the suggestions in the AI chat.
Common mistakes
- Showing more chips than fit on a line. Use a filter sheet.
- Using chips as buttons for main actions.
- Marking the selected chip in a way that differs between screens.
Questions
What are chips used for in a mobile app?
To filter a list, to pick one or several options from a short set, to suggest a next step or to show something the user added, such as a recipient. Material 3 names these assist, filter, input and suggestion chips.
Does iOS have chips?
Apple’s guidelines name no chip; iOS apps use buttons, segmented controls or tokens in a search field for the same jobs. Appetite UI’s Chip serves both platforms, so the same filter row works in an iOS and an Android frame.
